About this sky Calculated sky

Positions are calculated for an island preset, not your detected location. Objects above the horizon may be hidden by daylight, cloud, terrain or buildings. The sea edge is illustrative. Object markers are enlarged for readability.

Solar-system positions: Astronomy Engine 2.1.19 (MIT license). Geometric, topocentric positions; rise/set times use the standard astronomical horizon with atmospheric refraction. Plan tonight shows geometric altitude above 0° and 10° from sunset to sunrise. Twilight bands use the Sun’s centre at −6°, −12° and −18°. These are calculated positions, not a visibility forecast. “View after rise” uses the plotted horizon, so its time can differ slightly from the conventional rise time. All times use America/Cayman. Dates are limited to one year either side of today.

Stars: HYG v4.1, David Nash / Astronexus, CC BY-SA 4.0. Adapted bright-star subset; proper motion and precession applied to J2000 coordinates. Download the adapted catalogue. Original constellation and asterism guides are illustrative, not official boundaries.

Coastlines: geoBoundaries gbOpen, CYM-ADM0-85170139, CC BY 4.0, 2021 boundaries. North-up local projection. The cone follows the camera's field of view; its length does not indicate distance.

  • George Town preset: 19.2866° N, 81.3744° W, sea-level reference.
  • West End preset: 19.6870° N, 79.8828° W, sea-level reference.
  • Little Cayman island preset: 19.6864° N, 80.0411° W, sea-level reference.

Moon phase and illuminated side are calculated. The surface illustration uses the NASA Scientific Visualization Studio LROC colour map (public domain); lunar libration and terrain shadows are not modeled. Stars and guides use astronomical positions, not a background photograph.
